Land-Use Planning
Mt. Cain Recreation Area Development Master PlanLandworks Consultants prepared a detailed study and plan for the Regional district of Mount Waddington (RDMW) for future operation of the Mount Cain Recreation Area and ski hill within Mount Cain Alpine Park (Mt. Cain). | |
|
Mt. Cain functions primarily as a regional ski hill, with alpine and Nordic skiing and snowmobiling in winter, drawing primarily from the immediate area and from a roughly 200-km area including Port McNeill, Port Hardy, Woss, Zeballos, Tahsis, Sayward, Campbell River and the Comox Valley. In summer Mt. Cain is used for recreational hiking and climbing.
This project was especially challenging, as it involves the operation of a private facility within an RDMW Regional Park. The Plan includes an assessment of existing facilities, tenures, services, improvements and third-party agreements. It also assesses the ski hill from a park perspective and includes consideration of the RDMW’s risk management concerns including emergency access and overall liability. |
The Plan was used by the RDMW in its application for tenure extensions for the ski hill, as well as by the Mt. Cain Alpine Parks society, which manages the ski hill, to obtain its approvals from the province and to negotiate road and servicing agreements.
